The flaw
A nearby attacker can reach the parser before joining the network
Researcher Quentin Kaiser documented a memory-safety flaw in Broadcom's legacy WPS Monitor implementation. It mishandles reassembled Wi-Fi Protected Setup messages. On vulnerable devices, an attacker within radio range can reach that code without knowing the Wi-Fi password or completing WPS enrollment. The demonstrated outcomes include memory disclosure and code execution on selected routers.
This is not a claim that every Broadcom-equipped router is affected. The implementation, exact firmware, hardware revision and vendor update history matter. Kaiser's affected-device list is incomplete and its detection tools are triage aids, not a final vulnerability verdict. The researcher calls the issue WPSplinter; no CVE identifier had been assigned in the published research.

Defender workflow
Turn an alarming chipset headline into an asset decision
- 1
Identify exact devices. Record router manufacturer, model, hardware revision, firmware build and who supplies updates. A chipset label or broad product family is not enough to determine exposure.
- 2
Confirm the implementation. Use the researcher's firmware signatures or wireless fingerprinting only as leads, with authorized testing and manual confirmation. Check the OEM or ISP's statement for that specific build.
- 3
Plan the remedy. Install corrected firmware when available. Broadcom says it replaced the old WPS Monitor with hostapd beginning in 2018, but device owners still depend on an integrated OEM or ISP update. Where no fix exists, plan replacement or compensating controls with the network owner.
Defender note
The patch has to reach the box on the wall
An upstream software remedy does not mean a particular gateway received it. The closure record should include the exact deployed firmware, the vendor's applicability statement, and evidence that the update landed. Changing the Wi-Fi password is useful hygiene, but it does not correct a parser that processes hostile radio traffic before authentication.
