CISA now lists the upgrade flaw as exploited
WordPress released 7.1.4 on 28 October with a fix for a weakness that could allow remote code execution during a core upgrade. CISA added CVE-2026-119977 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 3 November. The vulnerable condition involves predictable staging paths that can be reached from the web while a full-package update is in progress.
This is a narrow window, but it is also a moment when many sites are changing at once. The catalog entry establishes exploitation; it does not tell us that every failed or interrupted update was compromised.
Check the branch-specific fix
Defender workflow
Record the update and look at the window
- 1
Inventory WordPress core versions. Find production and staging sites, including installations maintained by agencies or hosting providers. Compare each running version with its branch-specific fixed release.
- 2
Review the recent upgrade period. For sites upgraded from an affected version, inspect web requests and file changes around the update time. Preserve unusual requests to staging paths or newly written executable files for investigation.
- 3
Verify completion. Confirm that the update finished, the expected core version is running, and the site still behaves normally. A scheduled update is not proof that the fixed code is in place.
Defender note
Treat this as a patch and investigation task
The fix is available, so the immediate job is straightforward: complete the appropriate core update and document the result. Where logs show suspicious activity during an upgrade, investigate the site and hosting account as a possible compromise rather than assuming the successful update resolved everything.
